Despite the return of fall sweaters and layers in the fashion magazines and NYFW runways, we’re still stepping out in our shorts and tank tops. Just last week I brought home a few watermelons from the Portland Farmers Market, all signs still point to summer! That said, I am anxiously awaiting the annual Common Ground Fair– a popular fall event and destination organized by the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association- and hoping the air is a little crisp for next weekend.
Since 1977, the Common Ground Fair has been, “celebrating the rural and agricultural traditions of Maine.” It is one of my favorite events all year long. My aspirations of buying a seaside plot of land and creating a small farm of my own are alive and well (while maybe mildly far fetched), and every year at the Common Ground Fair I take notes of the tools, techniques and animals I will one day gather in a place I have yet to call my own. The brilliant minds that congregate each year at the fair as presenters, demonstrators, and visitors are a supercharge of inspiration.
While the organic community garden plot my boyfriend and I planted this year may not make a strong case for my title as a farmer just yet, I hold out hope that one day our greens and carrots will be as beautiful as those pictured above and below from our favorite local organic source, Green Spark Farm.
What are you looking forward to this fall? What is your favorite part of changing seasons?
Happy weekend, Blair
