We’ve taken an extended break from the blog (because exciting things are happening… but that’s another post) and we are super duper excited to jump back in and share this interview with you from Kylie Watts of Watts in Maine.
We featured Kylie and her husband Dave’s gorgeous Perfect Catch Cuff on the blog back in March. Their brass cuff is the ultimate statement piece, conversation starter, and it transitions effortlessly from the office to casual drinks with friends to a schmancy dinner out on the town. I wear the cuff that Hayley bought me all. the. time. No joke. After you finish reading this interview you should pop into one of their several retailers (all around the country… just check their website for stockists) and pick one up- it’s the “perfect” compliment to every summer ensemble!
Here is the inside scoop on how they got their start, what inspires their creative flow, and the highlights of their journey with Watts in Maine so far.
Happy summer! Blair
SS+C: What was the spark that started Watts in Maine?
WM: The spark to get me going was my childhood friend, Jennifer MacDonald, who’s a brand strategist. I knew she had extensive experience in social media, so I brought her our product to get her thoughts. She told me I needed to pursue this as nautical products are so “in” right now & gave me tips on how to get started. I honestly had my moments of hitting roadblocks and wanting to give up, but she has been a huge support, giving me the confidence I needed to keep going.
SS+C: What has been the most rewarding aspect of owning your own business?
WM: That we get the freedom to create our own vision with no restrictions-knowing we are building this brand and that I personally am doing something I love.
SS+C: What were/are the most important elements to you when you set up your creative environment?
WM: A comfortable work environment. To be honest we try to work outside as much as possible.
SS+C: How do you gather and process inspiration?
WM: It’s amazing what you can find to be inspiring. We are aware of what surrounds us and search for beauty in objects that people may overlook. Sometimes the most simplistic item can hold the most beauty. Lately we have been inspired during the developing process and by the lobster gauge itself.
SS+C: As fellow Mainers, what is your favorite thing to do in Maine -or- what is your favorite season and why?
WM: My husband and I love the coast. He grew up on Vinalhaven Island, so in the summer we enjoy going out to see the family. There’s nothing like lobster right off the boat, clamming in your front yard, & the smell of the ocean air!
SS+C: How has your style, aesthetic, and/or business changed since you first started?
WM: Since starting our business I am definitely more aware of what great things other Mainers are making-we are a creative bunch! Maine Made products are big & and I am acquiring quite the collection.
SS+C: What is the best piece of business/life advice you’ve ever received?
WM: Be true to yourself, do you.
SS+C: What has been your happiest moment with Watts in Maine?
WM: Honestly, just the feedback in general from the customers and when they share posts of their cuff. Love seeing our hard work appreciated & loved.
SS+C: What has been the biggest surprise since starting Watts in Maine?
WM: The support & advice we have received from other entrepreneurs. We are excited to be a part of this community!
SS+C: What is your favorite accessory to pair with the Perfect Catch Cuff?
WM: My Caribbean Lovers Loop Bracelet from the Caribbean Bracelet Company. The Caribbean & Maine are our two favorite places to be so having a piece of both on my wrist is fitting.
SS+C: Have you spotted a stranger wearing the Perfect Catch Cuff in public? What was/would be your reaction?
WM: I actually had the opposite happen. Someone asked me, “Is that a Perfect Catch?” She said she had seen it in K. Colette and loved them. I then told her that I was one of the owners and thanked her. I was so happy that someone recognized our cuff!
