With sunny days again, and a trip to Florida- tomorrow!– we are itching for spring and warmer weather. So, this past weekend we grabbed some goodies and had a little pastry picnic on the State Pier!
We stopped at Standard Baking Co., a renowned Portland bakery that supplies many area restaurants, shops, and hungry bellies. Even as proud owners of the Standard Baking Co. cookbook we still find ourselves stopping in regularly because, frankly, nobody does it like they do. While I snapped some photos, Blair went crazy at the counter! It’s hard to practice self-restraint standing in front of their beautiful and bountiful displays with your nose full of those warm bakery smells. It’s rather intoxicating and lovely.
As you might imagine, the croissants are second to none- light, flakey and buttery. The famous morning bun (we like ours with nuts!) is a standout. The financier is made of a delightful pecan batter and is chocolate-topped. The blueberry scone has a tender crumb and just the right hint of sweetness. The tart cherry frangipane has a smooth filling and a touch of almond. And Blair is exceptionally fond of their single serving pizzas.
Despite the chill, we enjoyed watching the ferry come in as we shared a couple… few… several pastries. We did save some for later- promise. Though the snow on the pier didn’t seem to think spring is right around the corner, we’re still hopeful!
Here’s to delicious moments shared! Hayley
